Youth Members

2010 Region 18 Youth News

by Jean Morris, Region 18 Youth Chair

Three very deserving youth members received this year’s Stanley Goodman Awards and another won first runner-up to the AIS Clark Cosgrove Award.

Stanley Goodman Award Winners

The first place winner is a member of the Washington Iris Club and enters iris shows in the horticulture, design and educational divisions. She has won the club's Youth Versatility Trophy as a result. Her educational exhibits have been over the top in creativity each year. She attends nearly every meeting and event held by the Washington Iris Club and is a willing worker.

The first runner-up has been part of the Classroom Iris Project (CIP) at Marquette High School in St. Louis County.  He was nominated by his teacher who praises his enthusiasm, competitive spirit and positive attitude.  He had entered the Marquette iris shows for the past four years and won many awards including Best Youth specimen.  He is a meticulous groomer and a willing worker, and often served as one of the show clerks.

The second runner-up is a longtime AIS youth and Wichita Area Iris Club member. She grows irises, participates in her iris club’s shows and activities and attends Region 18 Spring Tours and Fall meetings as she is able.

Congratulations to all three of our Stanley Goodman winners!

Clark Cosgrove Award First Runner-Up

The first runner-up to the Clark Cosgrove Award has been an AIS and Washington Iris Club (WIC) member for several years and grows about 75 irises in many classes including species and historics.  He likes broken color and space age irises with “Millennium Falcon’ being his favorite variety.  He attends most meetings, helps with shows, recruits new members and helps with the iris sales (he is tall which is a big asset in putting up and taking down the sales tent).  He also visits local gardens at bloom time.  He enters every show and has won numerous youth awards in horticulture, design and educational divisions.  He learned how to hybridize several years ago and has a row of median and TB seedlings under review.  He is an Apprentice judge and is nearly finished with his requirements to become a Garden/Exhibition judge.
